Avalon’s “Heart’s Desire” Program Lifts World War II Veteran into the Skies

November 12, 2025

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Avalon Health Care Group, a leading provider of compassionate veteran care, successfully fulfilled a deeply cherished wish for one of its residents through the transformative “Heart’s Desire” program. Mr. Doug Shay, a former Navy Seaman First Class World War II veteran and resident at the Salt Lake Veterans Home, has once again experienced the profound joy of flight.

Mr. Shay, following his dedicated service to our country, fostered a lifelong passion for aviation, finding pleasure in being around and traveling on airplanes. His heart’s desire was to take to the skies once more.

The team at the William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home, coordinating the efforts of the “Heart’s Desire” program, made Doug’s wish a reality. By collaborating with a generous pilot who owns a six-seater jet, the program champions orchestrated all the necessary details for Mr. Shay to enjoy his flight, providing him with a memorable and uplifting experience.

“Seeing Doug once again experiencing the joy of flight was truly inspiring,” said Angela Braegger, Administrator of William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home. “Making this wish come true underscores the commitment of the ‘Heart’s Desire’ program to honoring our veterans and enriching their lives outside of daily care.”
