Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CNA?
In 1987, the Nursing Home Reform Act was adopted by congress and defined training and evaluation standards for nursing assistants.  CNA stands for Certified Nursing Assistant.  A CNA provides hands on care to patients in hospitals, clients in their homes for home health care agencies, and residents in long term care settings.

Do I need to be an Avalon employee to attend classes?
No- our classes are open to the general public. However, if you become an Avalon employee any time during the 12-month period after you complete your class, Avalon will reimburse you for any tuition and testing fees paid.

What if I already work for an Avalon facility, but there are only classes being offered at a different facility then where I work?
You can attend any class at any Avalon facility free of charge if you are already an employee.

If I am an Avalon employee, do I need to pay for my own tuition or state testing fees?
As an Avalon Employee you will pay for your testing fees and submit it to the facility for reimbursement. The CNA state exam fee is $110.

What if I want to take the class first and then later decide to apply for employment with Avalon?
If you sign on with Avalon any time during the 12 months after you complete the CNA training program, you will be reimbursed the cost of your certification program! If you are hired by Avalon and do not complete your 12-month term the reimbursement is prorated for the length of employment.

Is your training program state certified?
Yes- we are accredited by the California Department of Health

What kinds of things will I be learning about?
We will be studying necessary material to pass both the written and skills state CNA exam.  You will learn the basics of nursing and how to provide high quality care to your patients.  You will be fully prepared for both the written and the skills state CNA exam.

Where can I take the state CNA exam?
The CNA exam is administered in Fresno, Sacramento, San Jose or Oakland, CA.

How old do I have to be to take the class?
You must be 18 years of age by the first day of class.

Will I have to renew my CNA license?
Yes, every two years you must send in a license-renewal form to the state.  You will need to work at least 200 hours in a two-year period and complete 24 hours per year of Continuing Education (CE).

Will I be guaranteed employment?
We do not guarantee employment with Avalon upon completion of the course.  However, we encourage all eligible applicants to apply for our CNA positions.  The job market is very good for Certified Nursing Assistants, and you are likely to find many opportunities in many different settings.
